Go read any hot tub thread online and you’ll find the same argument playing out.
One owner says his tub costs “about $25 a month for electricity, maybe $4 a month for chemicals.” A few replies down, someone else reports a tub that added $300 to his winter bill. In the same thread, the guy who started it says he doesn’t believe the low numbers — his tub is wired to a 50-amp circuit, and he can’t see how that runs on pocket change.
Nobody in that thread ever resolved it. And that’s the problem.
If you’re shopping for a hot tub right now, you’ve probably seen a dealer page confidently telling you it’ll be “$30 to $50 a month.” You’ve also seen a real owner say it cost him six times that. You have no way to tell which one describes the tub you’re about to buy.
So let’s do something different. Instead of handing you another number, we’ll show you the math, explain what actually creates that gap, and walk through what it looks like at Virginia electricity rates. By the end you’ll be able to estimate any tub you’re considering — including ones we don’t sell.
Both numbers are true. That’s the whole point.
Here’s the thing people miss when they argue about this: a $25/month tub and a $150/month tub can sit side by side in the same backyard, in the same weather, set to the same temperature.
A hot tub is a heavily insulated box of hot water. Its entire job, energy-wise, is replacing the heat that escapes. How much escapes depends on how the tub is built and how it’s cared for — and the difference between a well-built, well-maintained tub and a neglected one is not 20%. It’s several times over.
The tubs generating those horror-story bills usually have at least one of these going on: a cheap cabinet with minimal insulation, a cover that’s absorbed water and gone heavy, or an exposed location where winter wind strips heat off the shell all night. Often all three.
So the honest answer to “what does a hot tub cost to run” is: it depends almost entirely on which tub, and how you treat it. The good news is that every one of those variables is knowable before you buy.
Do the math for your own tub
The formula is simple:
Average kWh per day × days in the month × your electricity rate = your monthly cost
Virginia residential electricity runs around 17.2¢ per kWh — below the national average, which works in your favor. Check a recent bill for your exact rate; divide the total by the kWh used and you’ll have your real number, including all the fees.
Now you just need the kWh figure. Here’s roughly what different tubs draw during a Central Virginia winter — the expensive months, when overnight lows sit in the 20s and 30s:

The six things that actually move your bill
These factors explain why two owners can report dramatically different monthly costs.
1. Your cover — by a wide margin
Heat rises. Your cover is the only thing standing between 100°F water and the night sky, so it does more work than every other efficiency feature combined.
Covers fail in a specific, predictable way: the foam core absorbs moisture through cracked vapor barriers, gets heavy, and stops insulating. If you have to brace yourself to lift it off, it’s waterlogged and it’s costing you money every single night.
A worn cover can easily double a winter bill. This is the number one reason an owner’s electric cost creeps up over the years and they can’t figure out why.
2. How the cabinet is insulated
Full-foam tubs (the shell is packed solid with foam) hold heat extremely well. Thermal-blanket or partial-foam designs insulate the cabinet perimeter instead and reclaim waste heat from the pumps.
Both approaches work. What doesn’t work is a tub with a thin skin of foam sprayed on the shell and nothing else — common in low-cost imports, and the usual culprit behind shocking bills.
One tradeoff worth knowing, straight from owners who’ve lived it: solid full-foam makes leaks harder to trace and repair, because a tech has to dig foam out to find the fitting. It’s a real consideration, not a dealbreaker.
3. Where you put it
A tub tucked against the house, shielded by a fence or privacy screen, costs meaningfully less to run than the same tub sitting exposed in open yard. Wind pulls heat off the shell and cover continuously. Factor this in when you’re choosing the spot — it’s free efficiency.
4. Your set temperature
Every degree matters. Lowering the water from 104°F to 100°F can reduce consumption without feeling cold to many owners. Letting the water cool dramatically between frequent uses is usually less practical; for longer absences, lower the temperature while keeping freeze protection active.
5. 110V versus 220V

6. Circulation pump type
Tubs with a small, continuously running circulation pump usually cost less to run than tubs that fire the big jet pumps on a filtration schedule. Worth asking about on any model you’re comparing.
The costs that aren’t electricity
Chemicals and filters: budget roughly $15–$30 a month depending on how often you soak and which water care system you use. Filters need rinsing weekly and a deep clean quarterly — skip that and your chemicals stop working properly, which owners discover the expensive way.
Water: you’ll drain and refill every three to four months. On municipal water in Richmond or Charlottesville that’s a few dollars. On a well, it’s essentially free, though well water often needs different startup treatment because of mineral content.
A replacement cover every five to seven years, sometimes sooner. Prices vary a lot, which confuses people — but given what a failing cover does to your electric bill, replacing it on time usually pays for itself.
What breaks, and what it costs

The parts that fail on a hot tub are pumps, heaters, and control boards. They’re not universal parts — they’re specific to the manufacturer and often to the model year. That’s why repair quotes surprise people.
Two things protect you here, and neither is the sticker price:
Warranty terms. Read what’s actually covered and for how long — shell, surface, plumbing, components, and labor are frequently covered for different periods. A cheaper tub with a thin warranty is not cheaper.
Whether anyone local services it. A tub bought from an online seller or a pop-up tent sale may have no service network in Central Virginia at all. When the control board goes at year four, you’ll be shipping parts and hunting for a tech willing to touch it. This is the single most common expensive regret we see.
Permits and electrical work in Central Virginia
Most people are surprised by how manageable this is.
In Chesterfield County, a hot tub or spa doesn’t require a building permit — but it does require an electrical permit. And for the safety barrier requirement, a powered safety cover meeting ASTM F1346 can substitute for a fence.
Above-ground pools are treated differently. In Chesterfield, a pool needs a building permit if it exceeds 150 square feet of surface area, holds more than 5,000 gallons, or is 24 inches or more deep. Barriers must be at least 48 inches above grade, and gates must be self-closing and self-latching. For an above-ground pool, the pool wall itself can serve as the barrier if it’s tall enough and the ladder is removable or gated.

Budget for a licensed electrician on any 220V installation. You’ll need a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit and a disconnect within sight of the tub. This isn’t a corner to cut — it’s the safety system.
The question that matters more than the bill
Here’s the pattern that runs through every long-term owner discussion: the people who regret buying a hot tub aren’t the ones who paid too much. They’re the ones who stopped using it.

Is it private enough that you’ll actually get in? A tub twenty steps from the back door gets used. A tub at the end of a dark yard does not.
